During our latest visit to Hungary, we had another opportunity to continue our long-running evaluation of Kia’s expanding lineup. Over the years, we’ve tested numerous Kia models across different segments, and the all-new EV5 quickly proved to be one of the most important additions to the brand’s European portfolio. While the EV6 remains the emotional choice and the EV9 targets premium buyers, the EV5 strikes what may be the sweet spot for everyday European driving.
A Familiar Formula—Electrified
The Kia Sportage has long been one of Europe’s best-selling compact SUVs, so replacing its appeal with an electric alternative was never going to be an easy task. Fortunately, Kia didn’t try to reinvent the segment—it refined it.
The EV5 adopts a clean, upright SUV silhouette inspired by the larger EV9, giving it a confident road presence without becoming oversized for European cities or narrow country roads. Its squared-off styling isn’t simply for appearance; it also maximizes interior space while maintaining excellent visibility.
For buyers looking to transition from a traditional gasoline-powered SUV into the EV world, the EV5 feels immediately approachable.
Built Around Everyday Practicality
One of the biggest surprises during our time with the EV5 was how intelligently its cabin has been designed.
There’s generous room for both front and rear passengers, plenty of thoughtful storage solutions, and a luggage compartment that comfortably accommodates family travel, shopping, or weekend adventures. The elevated seating position provides an excellent view of the road, making the vehicle feel relaxed and confidence-inspiring in both city traffic and on longer motorway journeys.
The minimalist dashboard integrates Kia’s latest digital displays without becoming overwhelming. Physical controls remain available where they matter most, creating a user experience that feels modern yet intuitive.

Comfort Takes Priority
The EV5 isn’t trying to be a sports SUV.
Instead, Kia focused on creating a vehicle that delivers smooth, predictable, and comfortable transportation—exactly what many European drivers actually want.
The suspension absorbs broken pavement impressively well, while steering remains light enough for urban environments yet stable at higher speeds. Long highway drives are remarkably relaxing thanks to low cabin noise and refined ride quality.
This is an SUV designed to reduce driver fatigue rather than encourage aggressive cornering.
Performance That Fits the Mission
The Earth specification offers more than enough performance for daily driving.
Acceleration is immediate—as expected from an electric vehicle—and overtaking slower traffic requires very little effort. While enthusiasts searching for blistering performance may gravitate toward other EVs, the EV5 delivers exactly the kind of balanced power that suits family transportation.
Rather than chasing headline horsepower numbers, Kia appears to have focused on creating confidence, predictability, and efficiency.
That philosophy works.
Range and Charging Designed for Real Life
Range anxiety continues to disappear with every new generation of electric vehicles, and the EV5 contributes to that trend.
Its battery capacity provides enough real-world driving range for typical commuting, family trips, and regional travel throughout Europe. Fast-charging capability allows meaningful charging stops without lengthy interruptions, making longer journeys increasingly practical.
Although some competitors offer faster peak charging speeds, the EV5 balances charging performance with affordability and usability—an approach many buyers will likely appreciate.
Why the EV5 Makes So Much Sense in Europe
After spending time with the EV5, one conclusion became increasingly clear:
This may actually be Kia’s most important electric model for Europe.
Its dimensions fit European cities exceptionally well. Parking remains manageable, interior space is generous, operating costs are low, and its driving manners are perfectly suited to everything from crowded urban centers to winding rural roads and long-distance motorway travel.
Rather than being an attention-grabbing flagship, the EV5 feels like the electric SUV many families have quietly been waiting for.
Continuing Our Kia Testing Journey
During our latest stay in Hungary, we once again had the opportunity to continue testing Kia’s growing range of vehicles. Over the past several years, we’ve driven multiple models from the Korean manufacturer, allowing us to follow the evolution of the brand’s engineering, design philosophy, and electric technology firsthand.
The EV5 stands out because it represents more than just another battery-electric SUV. It demonstrates how Kia has matured its EV lineup, creating a vehicle that prioritizes real-world usability over marketing gimmicks.
For European buyers considering their first electric SUV, that’s a compelling combination.
Final Verdict
The Kia EV5 Earth isn’t designed to dominate drag races or generate viral headlines.
Instead, it focuses on delivering exactly what most families need: space, comfort, practicality, efficiency, modern technology, and reassuring everyday usability.
In many ways, it succeeds by not trying too hard.
If the Sportage has been one of Europe’s benchmark family SUVs for years, the EV5 has every opportunity to become its electric successor. After our latest hands-on experience, we believe it deserves serious consideration from anyone shopping in the increasingly competitive compact electric SUV segment.
