Jeep is reaching back more than 80 years for one of its most historically significant special editions yet. The new 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A celebrates the legendary Willys CJ-2A, the first Jeep vehicle created specifically for civilian use, combining Wrangler Rubicon capability with retro-inspired wheels, heritage colors and an entirely new premium interior. Arriving as the 11th model in Jeep’s Twelve 4 Twelve series, the JL-2A creates a direct connection between today’s Wrangler and the vehicle that launched the Civilian Jeep legacy in 1945.

The 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A Goes Back to 1945

Few vehicles can claim a history as recognizable as the Jeep Wrangler’s.

Its ancestry can be traced directly to the rugged military vehicles developed for World War II, but one of the most important chapters in that story began in July 1945.

That was when the battle-proven formula of the military Willys MB was adapted for civilian customers with the introduction of the Willys CJ-2A.

The letters “CJ” stood for Civilian Jeep, and the CJ-2A represented a major change in purpose. Instead of being designed primarily for military duty, the new Jeep was intended for farms, ranches, factories and other civilian applications across postwar America.

More than eight decades later, Jeep is celebrating that transition with the 2027 Wrangler JL-2A.

“The original CJ-2A represents a defining chapter in Jeep brand history. It is the moment the Jeep vehicle found a new purpose in communities across America,” Jeep brand CEO Branden Coté said.

The new special edition isn’t intended to be a visual replica of the CJ-2A. Instead, Jeep has taken some of the original vehicle’s most distinctive colors and design details and reinterpreted them around a modern Wrangler Rubicon.

The Willys CJ-2A Changed Jeep History

The original CJ-2A was built by Willys-Overland in Toledo, Ohio, and took the basic capability that had proven itself under extraordinarily demanding military conditions and adapted it for civilian life.

Several changes helped distinguish the civilian model.

The CJ-2A gained practical features including a tailgate and rear power takeoff, making it far better suited to agricultural and industrial applications.

It also received larger headlights and the seven-slot grille that would eventually become one of the most recognizable elements of Jeep design.

But the civilian Jeep wasn’t purely about function.

Willys-Overland also introduced memorable postwar color combinations that gave the little utility vehicle considerably more personality.

Among them were Harvest Tan with Sunset Red wheels and Pasture Green paired with Autumn Yellow wheels.

Those combinations have become a major source of inspiration for the new JL-2A.

Gobi Returns for 2027

One of the most obvious connections between old and new is the exterior color palette.

Jeep is bringing Gobi back for the 2027 model year, and the sandy exterior color takes direct inspiration from the Harvest Tan finish available on the original CJ-2A.

On the Wrangler JL-2A, Gobi will headline the palette on the two-door version.

The four-door model will prominently showcase the appropriately named ’41 color.

Customers aren’t restricted to those heritage-oriented choices, however. The JL-2A will also be available in Bright White, Sting Gray, Ghost and Joose.

That gives buyers the opportunity to decide how strongly they want to emphasize the special edition’s retro character.

For those wanting the closest visual connection to the 1945 inspiration, however, Gobi should be particularly appealing.

Retro Joose Wheels Recreate One of the CJ-2A’s Most Memorable Details

The wheels may be the JL-2A’s most distinctive exterior feature.

Jeep has developed exclusive 17-inch retro wheels painted in Joose, creating a modern interpretation of the Sunset Red wheels fitted to some original CJ-2As.

The colorful wheels immediately separate the JL-2A from a conventional Wrangler Rubicon.

More importantly, they aren’t simply decorative.

Jeep pairs them with standard 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrain tires, preserving the serious off-road capability expected from a Rubicon-based Wrangler.

Orange front and rear tow hooks continue the colorful theme while creating another visual link to the Joose wheels.

The JL-2A also receives body-color fender flares and a body-color three-piece hardtop, producing a cleaner and more unified exterior appearance.

Dark Metallic Grey grille accents provide contrast around the Wrangler’s seven-slot grille.

The result is unmistakably modern Wrangler, but with enough unusual details to make the historical inspiration immediately apparent.

Rubicon Underpinnings Mean This Heritage Edition Is Still Built for Trails

Jeep could have created the JL-2A as a purely cosmetic heritage package, but instead chose the Wrangler Rubicon as its foundation.

That is an important distinction.

The special edition isn’t simply designed to look adventurous while celebrating Jeep history. It retains the Trail Rated capability associated with one of the most serious factory off-road configurations in the Wrangler family.

The standard 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrain tires reinforce that purpose.

The JL-2A also comes standard with a front TrailCam featuring an integrated washer, helping drivers see obstacles immediately ahead of the vehicle while navigating difficult terrain.

In that sense, the new special edition follows the same broad philosophy as its 1945 inspiration.

The original CJ-2A was designed to work. The modern JL-2A may be significantly more luxurious and sophisticated, but Jeep has made sure its historical appearance doesn’t come at the expense of genuine capability.

The Interior Is Unlike Any Other Wrangler

The most substantial transformation may actually be inside.

Jeep has created a completely new color and material combination specifically for the JL-2A, marking a first for the Wrangler.

The seats are wrapped in Nappa Heritage Tan leather, immediately establishing a warmer and more traditional atmosphere than the interiors normally associated with the Wrangler Rubicon.

Nappa PUR material is also used across the instrument-panel mid-bolster.

Jeep then contrasts the Heritage Tan surfaces with Bison Brown door panels, lower instrument panel and center console.

The combination gives the cabin a rich earth-tone appearance appropriate for a vehicle inspired by a 1940s agricultural workhorse.

But Jeep hasn’t attempted to make the interior look artificially old.

Instead, Desert Orange stitching adds a much brighter contemporary accent throughout the cabin.

The orange detailing visually connects the interior with the Joose-painted wheels and orange tow hooks outside.

It’s a clever interpretation of the original CJ-2A color philosophy without attempting to reproduce a 1945 cabin inside a modern SUV.

Willys-Overland Details Are Hidden Throughout the Cabin

Jeep has also incorporated several smaller historical details specifically for enthusiasts familiar with the brand’s history.

An exclusive Willys-Overland satin chrome shifter medallion provides one of the most obvious references.

Heritage-inspired HVAC vent graphics offer another.

The graphics feature the iconic seven-slot Jeep grille on one side and a Willys silhouette on the other, subtly connecting the modern dashboard with the vehicle that inspired the special edition.

There’s an even more interesting detail at the rear.

Jeep has created an exclusive swing-gate plaque based on the dashboard data plate artwork found on the original CJ-2A.

The plaque includes farm and factory imagery referencing the agricultural and industrial roles the civilian Jeep was originally designed to perform.

These details could easily have been replaced with generic special-edition badges, but the historically specific references give the JL-2A considerably more character.

Modern Convenience Comes Standard

Despite all the visual references to 1945, the JL-2A remains thoroughly modern when it comes to everyday equipment.

Jeep includes the Convenience Group as standard equipment.

That brings remote start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a universal garage door opener.

The previously mentioned front TrailCam is also standard and includes an integrated washer, an especially useful feature when mud, dust or water would otherwise obscure the camera lens during off-road driving.

The combination reflects what Jeep is trying to accomplish with the entire JL-2A concept.

It celebrates the simplicity and purposefulness of the original civilian Jeep without requiring modern buyers to give up the comfort, technology and usability expected from a contemporary Wrangler.

Only $115 Separates the JL-2A From a Comparable Rubicon

Perhaps one of the most surprising details is the price of the package.

The 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A package carries an MSRP of $4,995.

However, Jeep says that when its included equipment is taken into account, the JL-2A costs just $115 more than a similarly equipped Wrangler Rubicon.

That could make the special edition particularly attractive.

Heritage editions can sometimes demand significant premiums based primarily on cosmetic changes and exclusivity. Jeep is taking a different approach with the JL-2A by positioning its additional historical design elements very close to the price of a comparable Rubicon equipped with similar features.

For buyers already considering a well-equipped Rubicon, the relatively small effective premium could make choosing the JL-2A considerably easier.

Orders Open in October

Jeep says the 2027 Wrangler JL-2A will become available to order in October.

The model represents the 11th release in Jeep’s Twelve 4 Twelve series, the yearlong program of special-edition Wrangler models celebrating the brand’s heritage, capability and culture.

With the JL-2A, however, Jeep has chosen an especially important chapter in its history.

The Willys CJ-2A wasn’t merely another early Jeep model.

It established the idea that the capability developed for wartime use could have an entirely new purpose in civilian America.

Farmers could use it. Ranchers could use it. Industrial operators could put it to work. And eventually, recreational drivers would transform the Jeep into something else again: one of the defining symbols of outdoor adventure.

A Special Edition With Genuine Historical Meaning

Retro-inspired special editions have become common throughout the automotive industry, but the Wrangler JL-2A has something most cannot replicate: a direct historical connection stretching back more than eight decades.

The original CJ-2A helped transform Jeep from a military machine into a civilian vehicle.

Today’s Wrangler exists because that transition happened.

Jeep has wisely avoided trying to create a literal reproduction of the original. The JL-2A instead uses specific historical details — Gobi paint inspired by Harvest Tan, Joose wheels referencing Sunset Red, Willys-Overland interior elements and artwork recalling the original vehicle’s agricultural mission — to tell the story through a modern Wrangler.

Underneath those details remains a Rubicon with 33-inch all-terrain tires and genuine Trail Rated capability.

That’s arguably the most appropriate tribute Jeep could have created.

The CJ-2A was never designed simply to look rugged. It was designed to go places and perform difficult jobs.

More than 80 years later, the 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A brings that philosophy back to the modern Wrangler — this time with Nappa leather, a TrailCam and considerably more comfort.
